Art House ProjectThe art in Naoshima has extended beyond
Chichu Art Musuem and
the Benesse Art Site into other area through this-so-called
"Art House Project". The project was initiated in 1998, having old houses in Honmura District remodeled and transformed into a permanent art site open to public.
1. Kadoya
Kadoya was the first Art House Project to be completed. The original house built nearly 200 years ago was restored to its original appearance with a mortar finish, charred boards and tile roof. The house display art work by
Tatsuo Miyajima under the theme of
"Sea of Time '98" where digital numbers were lid up under water inside the house.
2.Minamidera
My other favorite site here! This work is of James Turrell's as well. The building was built by Tadao Ando with the attempt to reminisce the feeling of a temple once exited on the same ground and served as a spiritual foundation for the locals. The work inside is by Turrell, so you can guess there is a mysterious feeling toward what lighting can trick your sight.
3. Go'o Shrine
For this project, the architecture itself is the artwork. Go'o Shrine resemble the architecture of earlier Shinto shrines, having the buildings separated into 'honden' and 'haiden'. 'Honden 本殿' is the main building where Japanese Gods (神様）reside, while 'Haiden 拝殿' is a hall for worshiping. Hiroshi Sugimoto design a stone chamber using a glass staircase to unify the world below with the world above. (The structure is similar to the renowned Ise Jingu in Mie Prefecture.

"Ginza", we didn't get to visit due to fully booked reservation to the site.
NAOSHIMA STANDARD 2This is the second phase of "THE STANDARD" which was held in 2001. The exhibition created various art spaces with houses, paths and facilities which were no longer in use, and these locations became art in their existing state. They believe that using the entire island as a venue, the created artworks deeply engage with the lives and history of Naoshima. Having contemporary art and architecture into the community enables art to enter into the lives of the people who live there and we can all get the idea of
"merging art into everyday life". I think it's pretty true. Once we have started to notice the beauty of our community, we tend to begin maintaining its beauty. ทำให้นึกถึงโครงการ"หน้าบ้านหน้ามอง"จัง ถ้าเราดูแลรักษาหน้าบ้านเราให้สะอาด ให้สวย ปลูกดอกไม้ก็ได้ ชุมชนของเราก็จะดูสะอาด ดูสวยไปด้วยเน๊อะ
1. Red Pumpkin 2006 (Yayoi Susama) 
A vivid greeting that contrast with Ferry Terminal at Miyanoura Ferry Terminal
2. Pinhole NAOSHIMA 2006 (Ryuji Miyamoto) @ Ping Pong Gallery
A cowshed turned ping pong place and a gallery, housing a set of Naoshima pinhole photography. A pinhole camera is made by placing a hole in a box and projecting light into the box and onto the film. By using this, Miyamoto captured the light, ocean and landscape of Naoshima.
3. UO-SHIMA-SHIO-ZAKA-TAKO-TOGE 2006 (Shintaro Miyake) @ Former Barber
The place was a former barber for employees of Mitsubishi Materials Naoshima Refinery until 1996. It was then used as an art site for the first Naoshima Standard project, and again for this occasion. Miyake created an installation with an octopus theme, one of the unique aspects of the Seto Inland Sea.
4. When loud weather buffeted Naoshima 2006 (David Sylvian)
A natural sound installation of Naoshima. The cassettes were available in Honmura. (I didn't get to listen to one though.)
5. BOKKON-NOZOKI 2006 (Shinro Ohtake)
Works by Ohtake is highly motivated by the theme of 'travel', no wonder why a lot of his works are related to 'ships' (as of those displayed in the Benesse Art Museum too!). The work harmonizes the peaceful living and traveling with an essence of "
'dreaming'.
6. Tree of Spring 2006 (Yoshihiro Suda)
A construction of a small Japanese house inspired by the private study room of a Dutch-studies scholar from the Edo Period. The camellia was used as it's one of the motifs often found in Suda's work.
- I had no particular interpretation of this work when I first see it though. =P
7. The Falls, Falling Colors, Glass Falls, Water Fall 2006 (Hiroshi Senju)
The main building of Ishibashi family's former salt production was renovated to display "Falling Colors", a body of work that Hiroshi Senju has been working on. In the storage area, Senju's unique large monochromatic "The Falls" was exhibited.
8. SORA 2006 (Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA)
A place where visitors and the people of the island can share a dialogue and spend time together. It's an oasis with manmade forests and shadows created by the changing sunlight.
9. Lady of Naoshima,
Escort for secret passage to Hachiman Shrine,
Sleepy Cat 2006 (Michiyo Uehara)
Naoshima Hachiman Shrine is a deeply worshiped place for the locals. It's believed to protect the island. This, combined with the high population of cats on the island, were the inspiration of this art work.
10. Mukaijima Project 2006 (Tadashi Kawamata)
A place located a few ten meters across the ocean from Honmura where Kawamata spend one month every year creating his works based on the ocean and islands. This piece of the project was on display at his studio on Mukaijima where we didn't get to visit.

Sugimoto's "Time Exposed" series were exhibited along the rock wall area in Benesse House (where Kee turned into a spider-man in the previous post!) Part of his prior photos of the same series were also displayed on the outside terrace of the restaurant at Benesse House Museum too.
12. Slag Buddha 88 - Eighty-eight Buddha statues created using slag from industrial waste at Teshima 2006 (Tsuyoshi Ozawa)
er... I didn't even recognized there was this display over there. It was somewhere in the distant area of the Benesse House.
our ticketsBtw, before leaving this post, I wanna leave a cute series of signs used in this event. The signs were designed by a company called
Nendo, with the aims for them to be inexpensive, durable, water- and dirt-resistant, easily stackable after use, and useable for future shows.
